English tests for study abroad

Different English tests are used by foreign universities as a measure of a student’s English level. Students must score the qualifying marks in the English test prior to get admission in foreign universities and colleges. IELTS - International English Language Testing System

 

IELTS is standarised English test to assess the English language proficiency of a candidate who is willing to study or work in a country where English is the language of communication or instruction. It is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council and IDP Education Pty Ltd.

British, Australian, Canadian, Irish, New Zealand, South African academic institution accept IELTS. Over 3000 institution in United States of America also accept IELTS. Fee to take the test is $280-$320


IELTS Test Structure

IELTS exam consists of four modules- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Candidate must complete all the modules.

Listening
Listening comprises of four sections. In the begining of each section, candidates are told of situations and the speakers.

Duration - 40 minutes.

Reading
Reading module has three sections. Candidates should read the given paragraph and answer the questions asked after every paragraph. There are altogether 40 questions in academic version of IELTS.

Duration - 60 minutes.

Writing
In writing module, there are two sections. In first section candidate has to explain some diagram, and in the second section candidte has to write paragraph on the given topic.

Duration - 60 minutes.

Speaking
Speaking module comprises three sections. In first section examiner ask candidate general question about hobbies, friends and family. In second section, candidate is given some topic to speak on it. Third section is about general question asked by examiner on the topic given to candidate in second section.

Duration - 10-14 minutes.

Band Scale

IELTS is scored on a nine-band scale, with each band corresponding to a specified competence in English.

GMAT - Graduate Management Admission Test
GMAT is an aptitude test used by business schools as a criteria for admission into graduate business administration programs likes of MBA and Master of accountancy. GMAT is used primarily in USA, but as well as used in other English speaking countries. GMAT is computer-adaptive standardized test in mathematics and English language. Fee to take the test is $250 worldwide.


GMAT Test Structure
GMAT consists of three sections - Analytical writing assessment, Quantitative section and verbal section. The test duration is 4 hours in general which includes two optional breaks. This test is valid for the period of five years. Maximum score for the test is 800.

Analytical Writing Assessment
Analytical writing assessment consists of writing two essays, one to analyze an arguement and second to analyze an issue. 30 minutes are given to write each essay. Examiners mark each essay with grade from 0 to 6.

Explanation of grade

Grade 0 : An essay that is totally illegible or obviously not written on the assigned topic.
Grade 1 : An essay that is seriously flawed.
Grade 2 : An essay that is seriously limited.
Grade 3 : An essay that is merely adequate.
Grade 4 : An essay that is strong.
Grade 5 : An essay that is outstanding.
Duration - 1 hour.

Quantitative Section
Quantitative section consists of 37 multiple questions which are of 2 types: problem solving and data sufficiency. This section is scored from 0 to 60.

Duration - 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Verbal section
Verbal section consists of 41 multiple questions which are of 3 types: sentence correction, critical reasoning and reading comprehension.

Duration - 1 hour and 15 minutes.

GRE - Graduate Record Examination

GRE is admission requirement standardized test for many graduate schools all over the world. GRE is managed by Education Testing Service. Fee to take the test vary between b $130 to $210 depending on the country in which test is taken. Current fee to take GRE in India is $150.


GRE Test Structure
GRE consists of four sections - Writing section, Quantitative section, Verbal section and Experimental section. The test duration is 4 hours. Verbal, quantitative, and experimental section consists of multiple choice questions.

Analytical Writing Assessment
Analytical writing assessment consists of writing two essays, one to analyze an arguement and second to analyze an issue. 30 minutes are given to write each essay. Examiners mark each essay with grade from 0 to 6. This test is taken on computer with limited functionalities(eg. no spell checker on computer).

Duration - 1 hour.

Quantitative Section
Quantitative section consists of 28 multiple questions. The typical format for this section is: 14 quantitative questions, 10 descrete quantitative questions, and 4 data interpretation questions. The grade scale for this section is 200-800.

Duration - 45 minutes.

Verbal section
Verbal section consists of 30 multiple choice questions which are of 3 types: sentence analogies, completions, and reading comprehension passages. The grade scale for this section is 200-800.

Duration - 45 minutes

Experimental Section
Experimental section does not add to the score of an examinee. It can be either verbal, qantitative or anaytical writitg. It is unidentified from the user. It contains new type of questions which ETS can add to GRE in future.

SAT - Scholastic Assessment Test


SAT is standardized test used by colleges in United Stated to check if a candidate is ready for college or not. It is owned, maintained and published by College Board. The grade scale for SAT is 600 to 2400. The whole duration of SAT is Fee to take the test is $48, $75 international.

TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language


TOEFL is admission requirement in many English speaking universities and colleges. Education Testing Service (ETS) is the administrative body of TOEFL. TOEFL has validity of 2 years. TOEFL is of 2 types: Internet based(iBT) and Paper based(pBT). Fee to take the test vary from country to country. Fee to take TOEFL in India is $140 worldwide.


TOEFL Test Structure
There are four sections in TOEFL - Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. The iBT version has a grade scale of 0-120. Each section is of equal weightage i.e 30.

Test Sections Explained
Reading 60 - 100 minutes 3-5 passages, each containing 12- 14 questions.
     
Listening 60 - 90 minutes 6-9 passages, each containing 5-6 questions.
     
Break 10 minutes
