Jacques Hadamard Mathematics Foundation (FMJH) is offering one-year or twoyear scholarships for students applying for a master’s position in mathematics in one of its member institutions—Departments in Applied or Pure Mathematics of the École polytechnique, École Normale Supérieure de Cachan, and Paris Sud University in Orsay.
A French master’s degree is a two-year degree in mathematics taken by students after finishing their bachelor’s degree but before commencing their PhD thesis (it is roughly equivalent to the first two years of an American PhD programme). During the last semester, students do an internship or research project which leads to a written work and an oral examination. After the master’s degree, students can apply to prepare their PhD thesis anywhere in France.

Scholarship
Scholarships are open to all students who have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics (or related to mathematics) and who have or will have completed the first year of a master’s or PhD programme in a foreign or French academic institution during the academic year 2011-2012. Priority will be given to M2 applications but two-year applications starting from the M1 will be considered.

The stipend is of the order of Euros 10,000 per year. In addition, the laureates will also benefit from a lump sum for the travel expenses depending on their residence countries. Laureates will not pay any tuition fees and also benefit from the French health insurance system. The FMJH will provide housing in students’ dormitories, the cost of which will be directly deduced from the scholarship. The FMJH will also provide French courses and assistance at the arrival in France.

The FMJH scholarships are devoted to support a specific master’s in which the laureates will be automatically registered provided they give the necessary relevant administrative information in due time.

Eligibility
The scholarships are open to all students currently studying outside France or to foreign students studying outside the FMJH’s institutions. Selection process will be based on the academic quality of the transcript and recommendation letters and will be carried out by the FMJH Steering Committee and the heads of the programmes involved in the FMJH.

Applicants are required to complete relevant online forms and send it before December 15. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection process in mid January, 2013.
